Many thanks for everyone's advice, I will go back and ask for a higher % refund and ask for a refund for the technical report which cost £100. . Re the question about how was the leather tested, the technician took a sample from the bottom of the sofa and tested it in the lab. Re quality we were led to believe by the sales person that they should last many years, we certainly would not have bought them if we thought they would need replacing after three years.

Remember you're haggling over the %age refund, so you'll need to come up with your own suggestion. Possibly say the suite was expect to last 20 years, it's lasted three (or 15% of the expected lifespan), therefore an 85% refund should be in order. You can then meet somewhere in the middle.

Does the store in question still sell sofas like the ones you purchased? (or very similar ones from the same manufacturer).

If they do, you could always get a friend to pop into the store and show an interest in the sofa in question.
When they are pounced on by a salesperson, get them to say that they are looking for a sofa that will last a long time, and were wondering about the quality and estimated lifespan of the one they are looking at.

See what the salesperson says, and if they do quote a figure, use this in any further correspondance with the shop. (and keep details of the time of the conversation and the name of the store employee who your friend spoke to).
