Came down to find the glass in the back door broken ....

Its the strangest thing! Its a double glazed door that we never use and the interior panel has shattered. Its like something very heavy has landed on it from the inside but its in our utility room so we rarely even use the room. I can't understand how its happened at all?!?

The doors were installed in 2005 (we didn't live here then but the previous owners left us all their invoices etc). Would this usually be covered by them? Under some kind of guarantee? I've called and left a voicemail but heard nothing back as yet.

A friend of ours who used to fit double glazing said it should have made a loud pop when it shattered as the argon gas between the two panels escaped but that definitely hasnt happened whilst we've been in the house, so we have no idea how long its been shattered for.

Anyone had this happen before?

If you don't know when it's happened, could you have been out at the time?

Is someone possibly not letting on they broke it by accident - door slamming etc, although they would ordinarily be toughened if fitted so relatively recently?

I think we must have been out, but cant understand how it could break like that, with no-one touching it

There's only the two of at home, and OH hasn't been in either. We're the only two with keys to our house. Mysterious!

That happened at a friend's workplace. She was talking to someone in the office and the window next to her just shattered by itself. Gave her the fright of her life.

My parents had a Colt house in which most of the internal doors were glazed with Pilkington leaf pattern toughened glass and a large panel in the door into the kitchen just suddenly shattered - really frightened the dog. After they'd gotten it fixed, they found out that it was a faulty batch of glass.

A small window in our old double glazing just popped one day - went with a right bang and made us jump out of our skin!

We have some velux skylights and one of them "went" it was a known fault with a size made between certain years. If you know the make of window go onto their web site to see if there is any kind of recall on there,

Toughened glass is very strong if you hit it with something, but only needs a slight twisting force to shatter it.
So I'm guessing something was twisting it slightly and it just went.

I've done it where I've just twisted a corner a tiny bit and the whole sheet went.

Is the door wood? Just wondering if the recent crazy weather might have warped it a bit....

    Hi, thanks for the replies

No its not a wooden door, just a usual PVC one

So I guess it really could have just 'popped' then. I think its about £130 to replace! Poop! Got a baby on the way!

I dont think it will be covered by any sort of guarantee after all this time to be honest.

See how much it costs to replace it and then decide whether to claim on your household insurance. Depends on your excess really and it would probably put your premiums up too. Dont ring them at all at the moment though, they may put your enquiry down as a risk. And then still put your premiums up.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
