pay for plastering??

Hi
Need an idea of how much to pay a good plasterer!

We've just had our double bedroom plastered walls and ceiling, it took around 15 hours. It's a really good job done, a few friends have been round and said it looks much better than theirs was, the problem is the guy who done it was a friend from school (who we haven't spoke to in ten years!!) and has said to 'just call it a oner'. We know this is ridiculously too cheap and we want to pay him a good price, but just have no idea what that is!

We live in the Southeast and have 6 rooms plus hallway and all ceilings that we plan to get done over the next 18 months using this same guy, any ideas on what the going rate should be?

it's very difficult to say plasterers like all the other trades need to earn different amounts of money (eg i've just priced a new boiler & heating re-pipe & i was £1500 cheaper than the other quote she got), plastering depends on the state of your walls is it just a skim or bonding or both etc etc but as a rough guide i would say anywhere from £18 - £25 per hour so for your 15 hr job you got a bargain & by the sounds of it a really good job as well, keep hold of him good tradesmen are really hard to find.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Speak to him, tell him you intend to use him again for the rest of the house but you dont want to take advantage of his good nature.

He may just say that the 'oner' is okay this time but charge you a normal rate in future.

Plastering is an art and a skill, dont let go of him if he is good
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Depends where you live, but I reckon keithgillyon has got the right ballpark. In my (London) area it'd be about £25 per hour.

i also got my plastering done by a friend, one full days work including materials was £150. I did think it was too cheap but he insisted that was all that he wanted. I would pay him the £100 and tell him you want other work done and then ask him how much to do it, explain you understand the first lot of work was cheaper as he did the job as a friend and that you would be willing to pay a bit more as you are happy with his work etc.

I did the above but he insists he is happy to do my house for the money, he is coming to do the rest of the house in the next couple of weeks, have agreed that as he does my house at such a good price I will get mine done when he doesnt have work on that would pay more

£150 including materials...ROTFL..he must have been crazy..
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Does this definitely include the materials?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Yeah it definitely does include materials.
Last year my partner (a gas fitter) done some work for a friend of both ours and the plasterers for free and I think this is why he is being so cheap for us, but it was a totally different situation our friend was struggling, had just bought a house with no central heating and had a baby due in a months time just after christmas.

I think I'm going to explain to him that we want to use him for the rest of the house but don't want to take advantage of his good nature so would like him to give us his usual price, if he still insists then I will go with keithgillyon suggestion, that makes it around £375, and just make him take it!

    Thank for your help
