Printing and signing a slip typically takes a lot longer. Now if it was like the USA where they swipe and hand the card back (no signature), then it's easier than contactless and I like it.

They do? I've been forced to sign for every transaction I've ever made in America. Usually on a touch pad and not a bit of paper though. This was 2 years ago though.

Though I guess Australia have a similar system in some places - you can just insert your chip and pin card into the terminal and remove it straight away with no pin required.

Well, if the transaction is expensive, they still ask for you to sign, but for lower value transactions, no one bothered with the signature.

So let me get this straight. There are loads of Android phones out there that directly support NFC payments.

Yet Natwest design some fancy iCarte cover for the non-NFC iPhone in order to enable NFC payments?:T

Well that's just silly. Not least because the iPhone 5 will almost certainly have NFC built in making the iCarte worthless anyway.

I've been waiting for months now for either Google Wallet to be officially activated in the UK, or for a UK bank to release an equivalent wallet app. And yet this is what Natwest come up with?

    What a joke.

I've signed up, hoping I get it. Looking forward to confusing as many shop assistants as is humanly possible. :D

Worth noting that the iCarte plugs into the dock connector of your iPhone, and has a micro USB slot, so if you have the iCarte on, you can charge and sync your iPhone via micro USB. (according to http://www.icarte.ca/features420.shtml)

On the security side of things - 'We take security very seriously so as long as you look after your passcode, we’ll protect you should you experience any fraud or loss.'

So far as I'm aware (aka an educated guess) the iCarte just has a generic NFC chip in and is activated by the app. So if you have the app closed, ain't nothing anyone can do with the thing. You can also set it to ask you for your passcode every time you make a transaction.

This is an absolute shocking waste of money given all the current Android phones that *already* have NFC built in!

It only makes it worthless if you expect every user of an iPhone 4 and 4S to upgrade instantly to an iPhone 5.

But Android has a much larger market share, and many of the phones already have NFC built in. They don't require any special extra hardware.

    Where is the sense??

My thoughts exactly, my One X already has NFC in it, but no use for it at the moment.

Banks & companies seem to see iPhone as better though e.g. FD customers have been asking for an Android app to accompany the iPhone app for ages and have been told no way, people ask for an iPad app and are told we'll think about it.

Edit: Just seen on FDs Twitter feed that they are actually developing an Android App now to be out by the end of the year :).
