I do all mine myself each week
I use a simple very simple bookkeeping programme and job done
HMRC are very helpful with what you can and cannot claim for and if you call their helpline they wont bite your head off for being 'thick'

  • Doing 6 months worth of accounts is always going to be overwhelming. Don't do it! Take it one invoice at a time, work through it for a little while filing things away as you go. When you've had enough all you got to do is hit the save button and return to do a bit more the next day.

Stop being lazy and get to grips with it. It isn't rocket science.

If you cannot work it out yourself, get some help. Don't just "chuck it at the accountant".

Well i would've attempted doing it again myself, but these are the things preventing me:

    1) I really don't have the time (i make most of the items i sell, so every hour is precious)
    2) I could be paying more Tax by doing it myself and may not be claiming all my rightful expenses etc
    3) It's very easy to make mistakes..... and the last thing i need is a fine from HMRC
    4) I don't really WANT to do it if i'm being honest...... and maybe the £240 is a small price to pay for no stress and worry.

I'm quite fond of pavlova myself and will happily accept a load if there's any going.

...Its no wonder some people get massive bills from their accountants for spending hours sorting out basic stuff that can easily be done or organised by the person running the business.

In practice, it is those clients who've spent their weekends laboriously compling their own idiosyncratic homemade bookkeeping system featuring the liberal use of multi-coloured highlighter pens that receive the massive bills due to the time spent by their accountant in working out what the heck it all means.

A guy with 20-30 transactions a month doesn' t really need to do that much at all. Remember K.I.S.S.

Well yes, exactly. If you go into businees doing something, you do so because you think you can make a profit by so doing, and not be doing something else, such as accounting. You can, of course learn how to do-it-yourself and 'save money', in the same way as people can learn how to service their central heating boilers themselves and 'save money', but choose not to do so on the basis that their time is better spent elsewhere.

Incidentally those Mazuma people do a Stuff it! service - If you just want your accounts and tax return done once a year and for us to leave you alone in the mean time then Stuff it! is the perfect service for you. That's only a £150 apparently. (No idea if they're any good, mind you.)

Look you might have had problems with some clients who do that and mess you about, but there is no need to take it out on me as that seems to be just a direct attack on on my long post written at the weekend which mentions highlighters.

Maybe you should get your weekend kicks from kicking the cat and not shooting everybody in this thread down wth your rants

    Or Girl. ;)
Yes, i contacted them today and they told me about the "stuff it" option.
Also contacted a few others who maybe able to do it for less than the initial £240 too.
