Hi all - Finally thinking of replacing my 2001 Sony Trinitron. I've ben watching the developments in television technology from a distance for years, but bever bought a new one yet as the Sony still has a great picture and I was worried whatever I bought would be obsolete in the next 6 months.
Smart TV seems to be the feature that is compelling enough to make me want to buy a new one now. I have two little girls (9 months and 2 years), so would love to be able to put on BBC Iplayer and play Postman Pat at any time of the day. Also Love Film and Netflix look like great ways to see films without messing about sending DVDs in the post.
So, I saw a Sony 32 inch I really liked in John Lewis, but it's so difficult to chose, as I feel like I have to catch up on years of developments to know which one to buy. I'm quite techy normally, but I'm too busy with childcare these days to do the research I'd like to.
So I'm hoping that the ever helpful forum can help me.
Recommendations please on what are the best models, things to think about and resources where I can get independent views?
Thanks all,
Tom.

Find a set that you like then go for the next screen size bigger, its amazing how they shrink in use.
If you are interested in' Connected TV' without subscription YouView might be of interest, it launches next month.

I was in exactly the same position as you and yesterday bought a 40 inch Sony KDL EX653 for a very good price. Not 3D but a current 2012 model with all the smart TV features that are very very good.
When I compare it to my 26 inch 2004 Sony Trinitron it is amazing how much better the picture is (and it's not just because it's bigger)
I'm really glad I went for the smart TV features (especially the built in wifi) but was undecided about 3D. The general consensus is that 3D is a passing fad but on the same note most people are saying that 3D will be a standard feature in future (like HD) - so not sure who to believe!
Hope this helps.0 -
Buy the best TV, forget the 'smart' connectivity... Then buy a roku box to make it smarter (or an equivalent e.g. Samsung smart bluray player)0
