Garden shed - to buy or self build?
Has anyone here ever costed this one out?
I would like a 6ft x 4ft shed made of shiplap timber. I'm sure I could easily make it but is the cost of purchasing the timber for this one off project more expensive than what a manufacturer could supply a new shed for?

But it will be tailor made. Better build quality. Your own design. Far better value IMHO.
Advertise localy for unwanted shed and then enlarge it to suit. These sheds tend to get full of condensation and very damp in the winter!I'm mad!!!! :rotfl::jand celebrating everyday every year!!!0 -
we bought our 6ft x 8ft shed , very well made, erected by the local company we bought it from, for 190 quid about 5 years ago...still very happy with it, nice and quick process too!
It all depends on whether doing a few hours overtime would pay for you to buy an hour or two of someone else's time...that is the usual trade off.
Depends on the amount of spare time you have too, I could have built the shed myself, but it would have taken up way too much of my time.
Get it bigger than you think you'll need-

Whatever you do; do not get one with a chipboard floor they fall to pieces at the first sign of dampness like mine did. My dad had the same model with a floor board floor; 10yrs later still solid as a rock !"Didn't I try to Warn them I said !"

I do not mind putting the time in to make it myself, after all my time is free.
It's just that after designing the shed and calculating the amount of materials and cost etc I may only save a token amount, just wondered if anyone else had done this recently?
As for the metal sheds they seem very practical but a wooden shed I think blends better in the garden.0 -
A garden shed, heaven!. Whatever the size or make, there is nothing more theraputic than taking everything out and replacing it in another position.
I may be well versed to offer an opinion on bothe the Argos pent metal shed and timber one. We had one of those 6x4 pent sheds at our static caravan. It is true that condensation is an issue, but we had both a washing machine, tumble dryer and mower in ours along with the electricity point, and everything was fine.
I have a timber 7 x5 shed at home. I made the mistake of putting 2/3 tiers of shelving. Whilst they suited me at the time, I'm now removing them and installing lengths of rough timber shelves, each 7ft long and either 4" or 6" width or both, 1" thick, these are less than £4 each. From Focus I have a timber workbench for under £30. A vice from Aldi.
What I aim to do is to sell my extending ladder & two step ladders in favour of a telescopic ladder which at £70 might be expensive, but it is far more managable and space saving. Try Freecycle - there are always loads of sheds wanted/on offer.0
