Bit more than a handy convenience.
Have you tried getting a small child in and out of a car seat with the sizes of parking spaces these days? It's impossible in some car parks. Difficult enough to get yourself out without banging the next car door.

Once kids can get themselves into a car seat, the need for them mostly goes away. But until then I think they are an essential in alot of car parks.

They are not essential at all. We managed with our kids without them and in small spaces too. It is also annoying when P and C spaces are placed nearer the store than disabled spaces as our local sainsburys has just done. When I asked why p and c spaces were positioned nearer they came out with the excuse that it's because disabled people wants the spaces in less busy parts of the car park. Have they not done their homework? To get a blue badge you have to have a problem walking any distance!!

Tesco's in Prescot, near Liverpool, also have the Parent and Child spaces closer to the store than the disabled spaces. Speaking to the manager there, and ringing head office, have made no difference.

It can't possibly be a real need, considering how recent an invention they are and how well people managed before they existed.

    Therefore, its a convenience.

Same as cars, washing machines, dishwashers, mobile phones, computers, air travel, air conditioning, brick houses, television, Internet, electricity, the list goes on.

Just because things are recent inventions doesn't make them bad, and the fact we have managed without things in the past doesn't necessarily negate the need for them now they have been invented. It's called progress.

The shops don't agree that they are essential - they know that parents are more likely to park where there are P&C spaces, and will therefore spend their money in their shop rather than in a rivals.

Whilst I agree that they are useful, they are not essential, but that isn't what this thread is about. The OP was whinging at having to pay £1 for a permit for a year - which works out at less than 10p a month.

Perhaps it's time to get the thread back on track....

All those things are wonderfully convenient!

Who said they were bad? I use them myself when I have my niece and nephew. They are most definitely just a convenience and not a right or a necessity though. Parents even somehow manage when those spaces are full! Being asked to pay a measly pound a year to use them doesn't violate any of your human rights!

Don't get me started on 'pregnant woman' parking spaces.

And parents like using them because...... they are easier? Otherwise they wouldn't be bothered and the shops wouldn't do it.

If you'd all like to come down to a local shop of mine that doesn't have them and has small spaces. You can park next to my car, while I repeatedly bash your car with my door, while I try to lift my DS out of my car. With my back hurting with the twisting I'll probably be in a bad mood as well.
I bet you'd complain about that as well. I can almost hear it now. "disgusting, they should have special places for them, so they don't damage our cars" , "Err, oops"
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

If it is a private car park, legally its one plot of land, they can charge a fee to park on the plot and you can park anywhere you like and they can do nothing about it as all lines, bays, disabled bays are mealy paint markings for guidance and not enforceable in any way shape or form.
Even clampers break the law if they clamp you after you have paid to park on the land, for all they can clamp for is avoidance of payment.

    :rotfl:

I always park at the back if I'm on my own, to avoid the stressed out people going round and round at 2mph desperately hunting for the closest space to the shop.

Lots of them are still circling angrily long after I've walked the few hundred yards from the far end of the car park to the door.

Enjoy pretending not to read my posts. ;)

I'm just fed up with this sense of 'entitlement'...

The OP was asked to pay a £1, a £1, for a permit - they weren't asking for her first born or anything. Her shock at being asked to pay for extra special parking (because that's what it is) just sums up how she feels absolutely entitled to be seen as special because she made a choice to have a baby.

The fact that she came on here seeking support shows that she thinks that we all would agree with her being 'special'.
