Best LCD Television 38"?

Hi all,

We are keen to replace out old telly with a thin LCD TV that we can put on brackets on the wall.

Please can I have recommendations? 37 or 38" is prob what we need.

Many thanks - we know nothing about LCD :o :T

Will of course be stoozing this purchase on credit card ;)

In that case, best have a read of this thread on why LCD are expensive fashion statements and have inferior picture quality for 90% of current broadcasts!

There as many different opinions about LCD or Plasma as their are owners. The only way to test a set is with your own eyes. Tell us what other equipment you own, Sky, cable, freeview, DVD etc what you watch and what your budget is and I'm sure you will get some good advice.

Thanks everyone - we only have Freeview and DVD player. Watch around 2 dvd's a week if that, rest is normal Freeview.

Budget is £400-£600 as this is the sort of price I have seen around?

The thing with LCD's is that if you give them a poor signal then they will display a poor signal. So normal old fashioned analogue often looks worse on LCD than it does on CRT.

If you connect the Freeview box via a scart lead and enable the RGB which breaks the signal down into its basic colours and then connect it to the RGB scart on the LCD you will likely get a very good picture.

Likewise your DVD player, if it has component sockets on the back (three round coloured sockets net to each other) and you connect it to the component sockets on the LCD the picture, the picture will be superb and I suspect that compared to what your watching at the moment you will be amazed at the picture quality.

Remember what you will be watching will not be High Definition although the LCD will expand the Freeview and DVD to fit the screen.

Get an LCD with at least one and preferably two HDMI sockets, you won't need them at the moment but if you intend keeping the new TV for a few years you will need these if you intend gettiing real High Def when is is cheaper and more available.

Your budget will get you a decent LCD, have a look here where they are discussed to death and make your own decision.

I have two 32" LCD's, one in the living room connected to Vigin+ and one connected to the PC, I love em !

Check here for opinions and reviews of lots of lcd's.

Hmm - after a long read of techie speak - seems like the options for our budget are:

    - Hannspree 37" or 32" (great prices)
    - LG 32" (looks very nice)

Now that we seem to have narrowed it down any thoughts?

Would have been ok, except we want black so that the image stands out more... the LG I have seen looked different, weirdly!

    What does dsg sops mean?

:rotfl: I know what you mean!

Well, seeing as I like the pretty-ness of the LG (and it's XD engine seeeems to be the bees-knees) yet also like the lovely price of the Hannspree, I am stuck! We won't be able to hang it on the wall, it will be on a table, and the LG does seeeeeeem the better of the two to be sitting on a table. But heck, so many people love the HS and it's 37" for the price of LG's 32"... oh shucks :o:p
