I have one of these, but it fails to open Fray Bentos pie tins

Not a problem if you never eat FB pies. There is thread on opening FB tins which has suggestions on tin openers

I have the following Culinaire Magican can opener but I don't remember paying so much for mine as I have seen quoted on the internet.

Mine broke last year since then i've been using the one on my swiss army knife. As the majority of cans have openers on them nowadays its fine for the few i have to open

Another vote for Brabantia. Mine is 15 years old and still works fine.

They should pobably all go over to cans that can be opened without a can opener though those who manufacture them would not be happy. Even the small bottles of largers I have been drinking lately can now be opened without prising the top off with a bottle opener. You can turn it by hand.

I've got a Zyliss (similar to this one http://www.lakeland.co.uk/12040/Zyliss-Can-Opener?src=gfeed&gclid=CMC-5o_A9rACFccLfAodBSucMA )which I've had for about 14 years, and is still going strong. I bought it in South Africa and it cost me just under R70! (which I think would have been about a fiver, but R70 was a lot for me to find in those days). It's one of those which doesn't leave a jagged edge on either the tin or the lid.

All well and good until the ring pull breaks, or the tin of corned dog key tab snaps off, or the sardine tin key is "lost"

Sometimes the older type of tin opener, the stab it in a tin lid and cut way round is the only fail safe option. You know the sort, your mum had one, lever type, claw ended

You're right of course:pespecially regarding corn beef tins...wonder why they have never considered changing the shape or how you open them after all these years? Some tins of ham are the same...
