You wont get it for free unless you obtain it illegally. I have similar nuvi came with car. Its 3 years old and have a 6 year old Garmin too with old maps. I am starting to use a tablet pc with free satnav and new maps just as good and much bigger screen and does so much more. Satnav are on way out as technology changers to smart phones and tablet computers
Its almost as cheap to get a new satnav than update them now plus new ones have much more in them like lane assistance, show speed of road0 -
thanks neverindebt. It cost me £89 when i brought it and i will use my road map this trip when i drive to Kent. then I will get my son to help me buy another sat nav. Otherwise i will spend to much time getting lost.0

To be honest I dont see maps changing that much how many new roads have been built in UK in past 4 years, maybe some layouts of the roads have. If you have a smart phone say for example one with Android system can be had for around £100+ you can get free software plus you have a phone and a camera included, all you may need is a mount and charger for around £20. You can get free satnav with android system like this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapquest.android.ace&feature=search_result
Even garmin do them now for android

Actually, I am finding that quite a lot of industrial estates etc have popped up or are not appearing on old maps that appear on current ones.
Many roads have their speed limits etc changed every year.0 -

Don't the free ones require a data connection though? So if you're in the sticks they can't download/process the route quickly enough0
