Reading emails on laptop and smart phone

I currently run 3 email addresses all combining on Windows Live mail on my laptop. As is fairly obvious, each time I log in I get downloaded all the new unread emails into Live Mail. No problem.
However I am new to Smart Phones and have just bought one. I'll now want to down load my emails in the same way to my mobile.
But when I go into my laptop later, what will happen when I try to also download them surely the other device is going to set them as "read".
I realise that I can go back to the old way and use the 3 online versions of the email addresses (i.e cut out the Live mail and log directly into Yahoo etc.) that would indeed overcome the issue. But that's not progress.
I'm obviously not the only person with this situation. Or am I going to find out that my smart phone is not that smart.

I have 2 email addresses set up in Live Mail, but only my GMail email set up in my iphone.
The emails appear in the iphone, and even though they're read, they still appear in Live Mail and I can read there if I want.
Emails don't disappear once read on the iphone, they are still accessible at Live Mail.

I've been through this with my system
You must leave the messages on the server in WinLiveMail AND your SmartPhone - I'm sure there will be an option in WLM but may not be on S/P
When you find the 'leave' option, try and tick the boxes to 'remove after X days)' and also to 'remove when deleted' - this will stop your mail server collapsing under the weight of your messages
If you use IMAP, then it will d/l them, but marks them as read already.
If you use POP3 (which I prefer) they they are all marked unread on each device till you read them0 -
Same as Libra10 above - my emails show in the Live Mail inbox, but if I've already read them on the phone, they show as 'read' in Live Mail too.0

I think I'm missing something here !
Currently I'm using Live Mail on my laptop which is combining 3 addresses. 2x Hotmail and 1 Yahoo.
Each time I go online it downloads all unread emails. I stress I'm not going directly online to the accounts in question, where obviously all the emails would be visible read or unread. I suppose it's the same as good old Outlook.
My concern is that on my mobile, following the same logic, it won't find any unread, because they have already been read by my Live Mail on my laptop. And visa versa.
I've had a thought though....... can't I download a smart phone version of Live Mail and expect it to synchronise.0 -
IMAP does what you want. All inboxes, messages, folders and statuses of messages within those will by synchronised on all devices accessing via IMAP. So you'll see all read messages on all devices and they'll be marked as read and if not existing on that device, will be retrieved by it even though marked as read on the server.0

My Gmail account in Live Mail is set as POP3.
Works well.0 -
I think I've the point again. Nobody above seems to have got the solution through my thick head.
Anyway time has moved on and I've answered my own question.
You load Livemail on both systems. This integrates all accounts. Simples ! I think the confusion is between running the emails "offline" and directly into Hotmail website.0
