I did the same job as this a couple of months back i used a fein multimaster, loads of companys make similar tools now or you could hire one. If you do ask your gas fitter to do the job he might have one already. Failing that john.h has the answer spot on just use a hand saw but cut from underneath so you dont scratch the side of the cupboard if you keep the cutting angle low you wont get any worktop flaking off.
if doing it diy id say a hand saw is the best way. dont use a jigsaw as the cut will not be good enough. u need to put the metal edging either side of a free standing cooker so they will hide a wonky cut slightly but not much in all honesty

Using a handsaw from underneath a worktop? Easy as pie, then.
I dont think you understand what i mean stand in front of the worktop turn your saw so the teeth point up and saw from under the worktop, if you sawed like you normally do you would scratch the side of the cupboard.
