Hospital and next of kin

Don't wait until you get taken into hospital to sort this out.
Make yourself a few of the NOK cards shown here - http://static.advicenow.org.uk/files/lt-nextofkin-2-8-10-1-988.pdf -
and have them in your wallet/purse/handbag/pocket.
If you get taken in as an emergency and are not able to name a NOK and a unmarried partner and a blood relative turn up, the hospital will usually accept the blood relative as the NOK. A spouse, even one you're separated from, will be taken ahead of blood relations.
You can also ask for a letter from you naming your NOK to be kept with your hospital and GP's records.0 -
If it is a very important issue to you, you could set up a health and welfare lasting power of attorney

it may not be a priority now Ames, but if you have a difficult family situation, it is well worth the effort getting that sorted long run.
I would hate to think that my brother had any say in my care at any time.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0
