vibrating fanbelt
Hi, i will try to keep this as brief as possible, basically i have had issues with fan belt on 2L hdi xsara picasso, the belt would vibrate up and down and looked like it was also twisting as well, i have replaced over time to cure this the belt x3, both tensioners, crank pulley, power steering pump. After replacing the last tensioner and belt the problem went for about 2 weeks and then returned, it’s worse at idle and if you hold the head of a screwdriver on the area that flaps it stops it vibrating. i have looked at alternator pulley to see if its clutch type but it’s not, I’m just getting very annoyed now as i seem to be throwing money at this car now. Does anyone have any ideas what i could do, can you fit clutch pulleys where a standard pulley is fitted could this be issue, I’m just at a dead end now. Any help would be very welcome.

What does the belt drive?
Does it only happen at idle? Is it idling a bit too low or slightly missing?
Sometimes you cant tell by ear or the rev counter. Its too slow to react to minor fluctuations.
Gets better or worse with the aircon?
Does it get worse when you put a lot of electrical load on? Alternator starting to show signs of wear?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hi sorryshould of mentioned all that, the vibration is at idle, when you put revs on itgoes away, also the belt power steering pump, a/c, and all the usual stuff, thevibration is on the largest span of the belt between the alternator, a/ccompressor to crank pulley. the pulley on the alternator is just a standard onenot freewheel, i replaced both tensioner’s about 2-3 months ago and it was finefor a while then it slowly started to creep back in, i do have a shorter belt 1size down that i was going to try but not sure if that will cause any damage, the belt its self does not feel loose though.

Tensioning mechanism may have lost it's elasticity. Does it have a spring loaded tensioner pulley? If so, consider replacing it.0

Hi, the tensioner is spring loaded and it also has a self adjust tensioner guide, both were replaced 2 months ago and are are adjusted perfectlly, this is where it's racking my brain.0

So does it get worse with the aircon on or under a high electrical load?
Check the voltage with the engine ticking over, Ideally when the belts running normally and vibrating to see if the voltage fluctuates.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hi there is no difference with with or without aircon on, and and also the voltage is stable when under load it just seems like a tension fault to look at but the tensioner is new.0

What the alternator bearing and pulley like?0
