I've never liked them myself.
However, my son was bored stupid with the Oxford Reading Series they get at school. He's in year 3 now and aged 8, with a reading age measured last year as 14 years. Although school realise he is advanced, they still persist in giving him easy flimsy books with pathetic stories in, then wonder why I have to force him to read them.
I bought a Harry Potter and said if he read a school reading book, he could read a chapter of HP. He's since read all the other books, and gone onto other classics like Roal Dahl, Rudyard Kipling, CS Lewis, The Hobbit and is currently reading Swallows and Amazons. It's all good for him, and now his younger brother is showing an interest too. If only they let them read decent books at school........:rolleyes:Here I go again on my own....0 -
Becles, I agree wholeheartedly - what is wrong with schools. They want kids to read but only in the allotted time and the allotted books. My son's almost ten and has read all the HP, all Roald Dahl etc etc. Is now reading Treasure Island. Has a reading age well above average but they give him stupid books at school and confiscate his if he takes them in (but thats another thread). I'm sure it wasnt like that when I was at school!~A mind is a terrible thing to waste on housework~0

Both my children are excellen readers. My son read the first HP at 7 and hasn't look back since - his current favourites being "A series of unfortunate events" series. My daughter while she is excellent at reading she is not a book worm like her brother.
The reading books at school aren't too bad - she brought home a Horrible History book the other week - but even that couldn't tempt her to read.
I don't force the issue as I believe that insisting that she read a book she finds dull/uninteresting will put her off reading for life. If she didn't read her own books at home that may be different.
She did try and read HP but couldn't get into it. Maybe a bit young yet? She loves the films though.

i cannot read the books, but, i loved the films - cant wait for the next.....anything that gets kids interested in reading cant be bad - theres nothing better than reading a good book curled up in bed with a storm outside - sooo cosy.........
if you like harry potter i suggest you also try eregon - my daughter said it is absolutely brill - just as good as hp....0 -

I can think of another over-hyped franchise obeywan_kenobe
I loved the original movies, but now? George Lucas should be ashamed. Also though, the producers of the Harry Potter movies should be ashamed, as the movies are appalling compared to the novels.
I agree with a lot of the other posters - anything that gets kids reading is a good thing.I'm so sexy it's a wonder my underpants don't explode.0
