For my DD's 9th birthday all attending took away a homemade cupcake with lots of fancy frosting and glittery sprinkles, a bottle of J2O and a handmade 'shamballa' bracelet. The bits were cheaply ordered from ebay.0

DD got a plant pot and a packet of sunflower seeds a few weeks ago, in place of a party bag. She loves it and checks on the progress every day, I know some of her friends are the same.0

I think books is a great idea. I would go for something like this:
http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=290194

This sort of thing is cute for the girlies and there are tons of football ones for the boys and maybe some rubber duck ones for those who aren't into football/flip flops! x

DD went to a friends 8th birthday party in her gymnastics club afew weeks ago and her mother had got a job lot of sports bottles from the council offices - they are made out of recycled materials and they sell them for 50p. They're pretty big and they've got non spill wide neck tops, my two use them for their packed lunch boxes now, very handy. Anyway, these were filled with sweets/chocolate and they also had a cupcake each.
JxAnd it looks like we made it once again

I gave my DS's friends a Terry's Chocolate orange one year, and nothing else. Got them on BOGOF and it worked out the same price as party bags but way more popular0
