Accidental Damage Claim Query

My son recently knocked over a 10ltr tin of paint while I was decorating his bedroom.

The bed, carpet, dressing table and TV have all been damaged. I am currently making a claim on my policy with MoreThan. I believe they will replace the items rather than pay me to replace them.

Can anyone tell me how this works with regard to the excess on the policy. I am new to all this having had insurance for years but never claimed. I dont know what to expect and if I have any room for any negotiations.

Many thanks in advance.

If they replace the items then you generally have to pay the excess to the insurer or supplier, or if you want a cash settlement for one of the items then they could deduct it from that
  • It does depend per prior reply on how the claim is settled, but most insurers will use their own suppliers unless you can get a quote that is comparable, otherwise they expect you to pay the difference.

Usually someone like the carpet company will be told to collect the excess by the insurer / loss adjuster and so will effectively bill you the excess before fitting the carpet.

Remember that the policy is a new for old one (usually) and replacements should be to an identical quality. As such if you carpets came from John Lewis at 40quid a sqm you can expect a current equivalent and not a cheap alternative from a budget fitter...

    Hope helps.
