Free P&P, atrocious packaging...

OK, so how to put this one across?
Purchased a small item from a large business seller, one of those with the miles of unenforable terms and slightly iffy feedback.
Turns up stuffed into a standard brown envelope which is already ripping from the corner of the box
Would leave a positive but hammer the P&P stars, but obviously I can't do that.... (I do wonder whether this is calculated or simply the seller being cheap)

To be quite honest, as far as eBay are concerned, tough.
You could leave feedback that's positive/neutral saying something like 'Good item, fast delivery, atrocious packaging'0 -
I'd do what OTB suggests, but I'd also contact the seller beforehand, let them know there is a problem both with the item specifically, and with their packing in general.
Just hitting them with a neg or a neutral, or even substantially dinging their stars without warning is unfair."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

What is the actual damage to the item?
The fact that it was posted in a standard envelope that is ripping is no big deal in itself unless your item has suffered because of it.
If there is enough damage to complain, I would contact the seller first and expect they do something about it (send another one, partial refund etc). If they are not helpful I would give neg fb.0 -
Long time no see, Terra - shame you have ditched Leela, btw.

That is the sort of thing that neutral feedback is for.0

No damage as such, a little squashed and trying to exit the envelope.
I sell the odd bit of stuff, and I'd never dream of stuffing something that barely fits into an ordinary envelope, whether or not it would damage. Recipe for it getting lost in the post through ripping, and judging by the terms and feedback they wouldn't give a monkeys.
Cheapest out there though, and that's the problem
No repeat business from me, that's for sure.0 -

That's the thing, there are plenty of people who are happy to save a bit of money and have their item squashed a bit, at least this seller passes the savings on to buyers.
When I buy the cheapest item from a buyer with dodgy feedback I know I'm taking a risk because I want to save money, but as long as I get what I've paid for I'm happy.
But I normally go for at least 99.99% fb if I can, I'm fussy

I'm pretty fussy. There's another thread on here about gifts and packaging being important. I can't afford to make too many mistakes so usually buy gifts offline to make sure I have them in hand on the day and I know what condition they are in.
I was browsing Amazon looking for printer ink yesterday, and saw that some ink sellers send cartridges with no packaging - not even the dust-bag - to keep postage down. A company I normally use take off the outer box but leave the dust-bag. I don't mind terribly much though, I'm hardly likely to want to give ink as a gift.
I am the same as Terra as regards feedback; I did buy from someone with 98% once, and had a good result, but normally I wouldn't risk less than 99% either. Life is too short and choice is too wide."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4
