Dell Lappy - Good deal or no deal???

Hi all. Just wondered what anyone's thoughts were on this deal I have been speaking to Dell about:

Inspiron 6400
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Core 2 Duo Processor T5600 (1.83ghz 667mhz)
15.4" WXGA (1280x800) with Truelife
2048MB 667mhz DDR2 Memory (2x1024)
160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400rpm)
8x DVD+/-RW Drive
256MB NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 7300 Turbocache
Wireless 3945 Card
6 cell battery (Don't want the larger 9 cell - sticks out the back, apparently!)
Basic 2YR AT HOME Service Warranty

All the other bits and bobs, as well as:
Free deluxe nylon carrycase
Cherry Burlwood Snap-on cover (nice!)

All the above for £727.00 inc vat & delivery.

What do you think? Good deal or not? I'd be grateful for anyone with a constructive comment! I tried to beat the guy down a bit more but he said his terminal was telling him he had reached the discount limit! I'd already got £150 off! LOL!

Cheers guys.

    Thanks for that info.

It was another 6400 owner that said the 9 cell was a larger battery which protruded slightly. Maybe not then....
  • if you downgrade you warenty you should be able to get a bit more off

use code 305 N03643a via the 'the shop by evalue code' link

    http://www.euro.dell.com/content/topics/topic.aspx/emea/topics/ecomm/evalue?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~ck=anavml

change the options to suit your spec and you get it to £715.57 delivered. Go through quidco - something you wont be able to do if you buy over the phone - and you will get a further 4.5% back as cashback off the price excluding VAT and delivery.

Drop the warranty to the minimum - and thats a matter of personal choice not necessarily a money saving tip - and you can get the machine for £598.07 delivered...

Not necessarily - dell can offer a better discount when you phone if you take the extended warranty.

    The problem with downgrading warranty:

The guy I spoke with was VERY vague when it came to the warranty. He basically told me that the basic 1YR collect & return DIDN'T include parts cover. He also tried to tell me that if anything was wrong with the machine then I would have to return it myself to DELL for repair and it would be labour only. I questioned him about this, asking why they call it 'collect' & return if no collecting is done - he they said he would check with his Manager and come back to me. He then changed his tune and said yes, they collect, repair and return my laptop but still insisted it was labour only.

I looked again on the website and it states that basic 1YR collect & return covers you for 12 months PARTS & LABOUR!

What the hell do you believe? Thats why I changed to the 2YR AT HOME cover. Also, 1YR AT HOME costs £101. 2YRS - £117.00!!! £16 for another year. Sounded good so went for it but maybe that's what he was hoping for?

Its only got 1 year warranty but i dont trust Dell, this is cheaper with a better processor, better graphics and i dont trust Vista yet and this has Media Centre.

CAR warranty is collect and return, the courier calls to your reg. address and collects it, or another you can arrange. I never paid for parts either.

On the subject of warranties, can anyone confirm that the 90 day CAR warranty is only 90 days for collection, but all new stuff has to have a 12 month guarantee by law? That is, after 90 days the cost of returning it is with the customer but repairs are still fully covered.

I was told exactly that when I purchased my Laptop from Dell in December!
I opted for the 90 day CAR, (to cut costs..it was a Christmas Present for Hubby! ) and was telephoned as the 90days were just about due, to be offerred 3 years CAR, and ALL Parts and Labour + Return courier costs included for £60!!! Needless to say, I took it! I posted this info when it happened, but can't remember which board, or thread!

Found my ORIGINAL post, as above!

    Hi.
I bought the Dell Inspiron 1501 for my Husband for Christmas (funny, as its me sat typing this on it now!!!) and its great!
We are both well impressed with everything about it!
Think the spec is pretty much as you listed. (apart from we got 80gb).
Only thing I could say is, I only plumped for the 90day warranty (as 12 month is already included), and as this came to an end, I received a phone call to say did I want the 3 year on site fully inclusive service for £60!
Seems better than paying more at the beginning!
    Good Luck!
