day out to york

I am planning to take the hubbie and kids to York for the day on Saturday but I am shocked at the family ticket proces for the York Dungeon and Jorvik Viking Centre (nearly £45 to go to both attractions  ). Does anyone know where I might get a special offer such as buy an adult ticket and the kids go free?

I'd give the Jorvik centre a miss, we stayed in a cottage in York a couple of years ago, and the visitors book had nothing good to say about Jorvik, apparently its expensive, and you get round it quite fast-not value for money at all.
Our kids really enjoyed the Dungeon, and I screamed most of the way round too. we got a reduction through the union I'm in (PCS) don't know if this applies to other unions.
If you're there into the evening, the ghost walk from the Shambles (nightly) is a must, so funny and fantastic value. I think there are some money-off vouchers in the tourist information centre for this, but its only about £2 per person anyway, with loads of entertainment.
Love York........ have a great time:j0 -
Can't help with the attractions but hopefully I can save you some money with car parking as it's VERY expensive in the City.
We always park up at the Askham Bar park 'n' ride. It's signed from the A64 on the way in from Leeds (look out for the massive Tesco Extra) and best of all it's FREE. Just pay a couple of quid for a family return coach into the City, and one of the stops is only about 100m from The Dungeon.
I'm with pringy on the NRM - it's a brilliant place and FREE. You can easily spend 3 hours here.

Jorvick is a rip off if you ask me, I was dissapointed when I went anf for the time you spend in there's, there's much better thinsg to do.
As said NRM is a great free place, car park isnt cheap and neither is the drinks/food but you at leats can make a choice as to whether your prepared to pay for it, and admission is free and a full day out. Little uns might be bored after a few hours though.
York is a fantastic city I often go there as its my nearest city to us.

Agree with the above Jorvik is a let down.....we did not spend more than an hour there at tops...NRM is good tho! Recently went to Edinburgh dungeons and did not think much of that so whether York one is same I dont know.. real let down for 10 year old! and us oldies!! Having said that agree with the Shambles ghost tour... was great! I love York though having been there lots of times i never bore of it!

Do you have a capital one credit card? My sister got some 2 for 1 vouchers today for the York Dungeon with hers.
And the best ghost walk leaves from the river, not the shambles!
EDIT: I forgot to tell you to go to Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate. It's the shortest street in EuropeMurphy's No More Pies Club #209

It's the battle of the ghost walks now!!
We laughed so much 'till we were crying on the one from the Shambles!!! But have never been on the one leaving from the river, so probably I'm not really in a position to comment!
Blow the bugget and go on both!!!!

thanks for all the advice. We went to the Dungeon and had a fab time, my 6 year old was really scared and my hubby was accused of "prancing round the streets dressed in a pink frock" :rotfl: . I discovered that if you buy the tickets from the tourist information rather than the dungeon they charge the old price (around £7 per family cheaper) and you get fast tracked at the door. Dont think this will last long though. Hubby refused to go to NRM as he hates trains. Had a fantastic day.0
