Tag Heuer Servicing Scam?

Firstly you assume that someone needs to be an expert horologist to know that a well made watch does not need servicing after eighteen months whereas, in fact, you merely need the intelligence to notice that most people do not get their watches serviced for many, many, years, if at all and yet they continue to work perfectly well.

Yet again, you go blathering on about something that I didn't actually say !

I DID NOT say that a watch needed servicing after any particular period of time. I was merely commenting on the times that the manufacturer recommends that a watch be serviced, which was what the OP queried in the first place.

Whereas, you, seem to be such an expert that you state quite categorically that a watch does not need servicing after these periods.
I would suggest that "foolish and gullible" would apply even more to someone who make such rash statements as this !
  • When I got married (many years ago and since divorced!), I was given a Tag Alter Ego by my then husband.

I've never sent it back to Tag, when the battery went about 3 years ago, it went to Watches of Switzerland andhad their in house service and battery replaced, I can't remember the actual cost but it was less than £100.

My ex-husband has a number of Tag's, Omega's and a Rolex, he gets them serviced religiously by the manufacturer in accordance with their recommendations, but one Tag he wasn't that fond of (an F1), he didn't bother with, when the battery was changed by Tag, they recommended a service but there was no pressure on him to take that service, he declined and the watch was sent back with a new battery and pressure sealed.

Whenever he has bought his watches, he has been advised of service intervals.

Why on earth spend a fortune on something so daft? Not MSE at all.

Have you ever worn any rings, bracelets, bangles or necklaces? None of these are very MSE, yet all they do is look nice.

Whereas a watch is a piece of jewellery that not only looks nice, but also tells the time (and sometimes date) - so it does two things for the price of one ... to me that is MSE!

    Nope.

Whereas all I said was that a decently made, modern, watch does not need a service after two years. One of the definitions of 'a decently made watch' being something that does not need servicing more frequently than very cheap timepieces.
Whereas, you, seem to be such an expert that you state quite categorically that a watch does not need servicing after these periods.

Again, a kind of straw many argument in that one does not need to be an 'expert' to know that if cheap < £50 timepieces will work for many years without the need for a service, then it is absurd for a much more expensive examples of the same type of equipment to need much more frequent servicing - when they perform no extra function nor perform their main function any more effectively.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

I don't wear any jewellery, I have one necklace which was a birthday present but it is hideous I would never wear it.
Can't bear things dangling off me, rings feel uncomfortable. I don't wear any makeup either that's a huge waste of money too

The only watch I have had where the glass is still perfect and scratch free
My Seconda watch is of similar age and the glass is still perfect and scratch free - funny that, they must use the same supplier :)

Worn all the time except when sleeping and just as accurate as any expensive watch. I only set it a few times a year when the clocks change or I go abroad. Indeed with any quartz controlled digital watch, accuracy is never a problem.

Oh, and I never get it serviced!

Hi Stinkerbell, if you'd like I can give you a watchmaker's opinion seeing as it's what I do?

No, your Tag shouldn't "need a service" every time the battery's changed any more than your car should need a service every time you put petrol in it.

"proper" mechanical watches like this one ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgJaFZ4imLU ) should ideally be serviced every 4 or 5 years because they have a (relatively) strong mainspring driving the gear train and, as the oil on all the pivots inevitably dries up over time, bits will start to wear.

In a quartz watch, instead of the mainspring there's avery small motor which simply doesn't have the power to continue to drive the wheels if they're getting too sticky from old oil so it's very unlikely indeed to cause damage by not having it serviced.

What some of the higher end movements do, as the movement starts to dry up, is sense the extra load on the motor and increase the power supplied to it to compensate. That's what they mean about "increased consumption" - the electronics are sending more power to the motor than ideal. But all that ignoring that will do is (possibly) shorten the battery life a little.

From the waterproofing point of view, any decent local repairer should be able to change the battery and pressure test / replace seals as required, with the possible exception of the seal in the crown ("winder"). These are usually designed to be replaced as a complete replacement crown which may, or may not, be available to independents depending on the exact model. But that's rarely a problem because it's fairly rare that you need to replace the crown seal anyway ;)

Incidentally, their servicing charges are frankly absurd for the amount of work involved - if I could charge half the hourly rate they are I guarantee I'd have no reason be hanging round a moneysaving forum ;)

You pay 8p a day for THE TIME?

It's everywhere! On phones! On tv! On clocks! You can even TELEPHONE A TALKING CLOCK!

Why on earth spend a fortune on something so daft? Not MSE at all.
Last time I wore a watch I was 12, I lost it and haven't looked back since. Have never been at a loss, no-one has ever said 'gosh you are brave not wearing a watch' I've never lacked knowledge of the time.
    And it's all gloriously free

Do you not have a job or a life! Sadly working people can't look at the phone, the tv or most of the time a wall clock. I have a job where I need to be on time but of course I could dump my watch and keep calling the speaking clock 100 times day- so practical.

It costs to call the speaking clock! Having a phone to tell the time costs more than my tag watch over time.
    June challenge £100 a day £3161.63 plus £350 vouchers plus £108.37 food/shopping saving

    July challenge £50 a day. £ 1682.50/1550

    October challenge £100 a day. £385/£3100

I don't have a job, but before I had my current baby I worked since I was 15.

How on earth do you manage without a mobile, a computer, or even Walls on which to hang a clock?
    You must be superman!

Unlike a watch, a phone does more than tell the time!

And yet you take the time to reply to this thread on MSE, on a device with a built-in clock. :)
