Can I do this?

I'm pretty sure the answer is 'no' but here goes anyway... :D

I live on the Olympic Road Cycle Race route, could I (or the kids) set up a stall in my front garden selling cold drinks?

  • I am not sure about this, but during the Notting Hill Carnival I have seen many people selling many things from their gardens. I can't believe that they get licences, hygiene certificates etc. just for one or two days. Perhaps your local council may be able to tell you.

In practice what's the worst that can happen? They could tell you not to do it again but as it's a one off that's not an issue. I doubt anyone would take it further, it simply wouldn't be worth it.

Just make sure you only sell drinks in sealed cans/bottles to get around any hygiene concerns and don't sell anything alcoholic.

People certainly do it on match days at Twickers. ;)

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

Tbh, if you're only selling sealed drinks - cans and bottles then you shouldn't need a hygiene certificate. You may need a street selling licence but then if you're in your garden you're not technically on the street :) I think the worst that could happen is you're advised not to do it again - very unlikely to get anything worse then a warning for a one-off and that's if they actually notice or someone reports you.

What makes you think you, or even your kids, wouldn't be able to do this?
  • It seems that you need a licence to do almost anything now: more and more rules and regulations come into force all the time.

Thank you all for your replies, I was expecting to hear that we'd need health and hygiene/street trading licenses.

I think we'll definitely give it a try so thanks again :)
