My sister recently received a new walking frame and a 3 wheeled rollator. When the new equipment was delivered they said they could not take the old ones away. ( I say old but the rollator in particular was not used as she couldn't grip the brakes )

Does anyone know what should happen to this equipment?
I feel sure, someone out there could make use of it.

Are you sure they didn't just mean that the collection of old stuff was done by another department?

Our OTs are always saying to make sure aids are returned when they're no longer needed.

They said it was something to do with cross infection. Apparently the OT did give her a telephone no. 0289292111 but its dead.
There may have been more to the conversation but sis forgets things 2 minutes after she has been told.
I did a quick search on Google but didn't come up with anything.
I will see if I can get a contact number for the OT, although that might not be as easy as it sounds!

There is a digit missing from that phone number. try putting a 6 after 02892 and see if thats a valid number.

I would assume different people will collect the old stuff as they probably meant they didn't want the new stuff contaminated by the old stuff if they were in the same van etc

All the used stuff that's collected round us has to go through a serious decontamination routine before it's handed out again.

Your GP's receptionist or the hospital switchboard should be able to give you a number for the OTs if you can't find it by googling.

That looks like a Lisburn Number - if thats the area you live in there is a depot on the Moira Rd where I had to return my Mum;s aids when she went to a nursing home. They are all collected there and cleaned and serviced ready to be reissued. Its in the industrial estate behind the House of VicRyn - Lissue walk - if you call the health centre in Lisburn and ask for the address they can give it.

Thanks for that. She lives in Belfast but I will give it a try, I have an idea where you mean.
  • If you ring your OT she will have it collected for you as that is what I did for a chair and a wheelchair that was unsuitable for my gran it usually takes them a few weeks to collect and they should tell you what day that they will pick them up, They wouldn't take the unused items when they brought the new ones because of cross contamination lol hth
On the countdown mortgage will be paid off this year if I keep paying bit extra fingers crossed fully paid out by July :j

My dad had a simmer last year for 3 months but couldn't use it, when he returned it to dundonald hospital he was told they don't get used again due to cross contamination, so it sounds like your sister was correct, I couldn't believe it when he told me, due to the state of the national health service, I thought they would try to save some money.

If you have equipment that you no longer need and the NHS won't take it back, you can offer it on Freegle/Freecycle.
