I received this month's statement, and it includes a 2.7% foreign exchange fee on a transaction I made abroad (the purchase came to £15.98 and a fee of £0.43 was added).

I'm sure I've never seen this before when I've used cards abroad - has something changed?

No, nothing has changed, the vast majority of cards will charge a fee for using the card in another currency. Read your T&Cs for confirmation.

It's always been the case - most cards charge and have done for at least 25 years.

They have become more explicit about it though - it's shown separately rather than being buried without comment in the exchange rate

No - most cards charge. If you spend a reasonable amount abroad I would recommend getting a card with no foreign exchange loading.

Thanks - I guess it's just that they've separated it out then.

Any recommendations for a suitable card to use abroad?

If you are a member of Nationwide and use their Flex account you can get a credit card called Select that is free to use abroad.

Thanks - I should've known there would be an FAQ on this one! :)

By next year all card issuers (debit and credit) will need to show the transactions as separate items, e.g. the amount and the fee. Some issuers are doing it before hand

We've just got OH's credit card bill - Tesco Credit Card- we travel a lot and this is the first month ever that it looks like we have been charged 2.75% per transaction, never seen this before in years of travelling and using credit cards - have experienced a different exchange rate being shown line by line. Has something changed in the last month? We were last in France in April and no charges broken down on that bill. Looks like we picked up over 25 quid in additional charges that were not expected so currently reviewing spend abroad - we go again in less than 3 weeks.....

2008 wins about £45.... but I know the big one is just round the corner....

Overseas fees have been commonplace on credit cards for the 25 years or so I've had one.
