Is there such a thing as a "one day" driving licence? (Or similar)
A relative has had their driving licence revoked on health grounds. They have chosen to undergo a private DriveAbility assessment but obviously can't go on the road to carry out the driving section.
They have told me that if they pass the first two parts they can then apply for a one day licence which would allow them to go on the road with an assessor to complete the assessment.
I've tried searching for a one day licence and a temporary licence but not found anything relevant. There's no mention of this on the DriveAbility website.
I could phone the centre up and ask, but I wondered if anyone here knew if such a licence does actually exist?

They do off road assessments.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.0 -
Hi,
Yes, I think DriveAbility's main purpose is to help people overcome certain disabilities and health problems and drive safely.
But I believe the DVLA can send people to DriveAbility to be assessed when there's doubts about whether they should be driving (on medical grounds).
My relative is trying to gather evidence so that they can appeal the DVLA's decision.20p Savers Club #1020 -
The DVLA must have had good reason to revoke ie a doctors letter.
Why does your relative think they have grounds for appeal.
No idea about a one day license, although dont see how you can get one other than from the DVLA who have already revoked!!0 -
How does a driving assessment prove you are fit to drive?
If, for example, the licence was revoked because of epilepsy then the person could be perfectly fit to drive on assessment day, then 5 minutes late have an epileptic fit.
The way to contest a ban on medical grounds is to prove those medical grounds were wrong - which means getting the support of your doctor(s).0 -
Only the DVLA can issue licences. Ask them what is required for your relatives licence return.
One day licence?. You are either fit to drive or you are not.0 -
Hi, thanks for the replies.
So it doesn't look as if a one day licence exists? I'd never heard of it, but I'm no expert.
I don't want to debate my relative's health as that's not why I started the post. But I will explain more about the reasons for the assessment. This is the advice for those who wish to contest the decision. I haven't given a link because it's found on many different sites. You should try to obtain a further medical report from an appropriate specialist which is more favourable and which states that, in that medical expert’s opinion, you are able to drive safely. It may be helpful to show your medical expert the DVLA’s guidelines set out in its publication ‘At a glance guide to the current medical standards of fitness to drive’.
If you can obtain such a report you should consider sending it to the DVLA and asking it to review its decision to refuse or revoke your licence. If the DVLA is prepared to do this you will not have to go through the process of an appeal in the Magistrates Court.
Other evidence which might be useful for your appeal in the Magistrates court is:
• a full driving history, ideally indicating a significant amount of mileage with no accidents;
• an expert assessment of your driving ability - see 'Useful Organisations' for centres which may be able to do such an assessment.
You should be aware, however, that the DVLA’s guidelines have been prepared by medical experts. It will be difficult to prove that you are safe to drive if you fail the DVLA’s standards.20p Savers Club #1020 -

well not unless you go through five speed cameras on the day you pass your driving test.**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. "One day driving licence" indeed.
What next, a "one day drink driving exemption permit"?0 -
What are the medical grounds?
Please assess this carefully and sensibly when deciding what to do. Nobody wants to find themselves on a 60mph head-on collision course with someone having an epileptic fit!0 -
