I think it's too late for that, but I would advise that he opens a new account in his name, transfers all the bills and his salary to that and has the joint one frozen. As it is he's leaving himself wide open to her taking all the money out and racking up an overdraft, for which he will be jointly liable.

So far she has taken nothing out of it, i think morally she wouldnt anyway although she certainly is suprising me at the moment.

"We need to get a law passed that will protect all involved".

The state makes legal provision. It's called marriage.
It is the easiest way to protect your rights.

And if you've got something against marriage, set up a Living Together Agreement - http://static.advicenow.org.uk/files/Living_Together_Agreements-867.pdf

The law has everything covered but people don't use it - optimism, naivety, don't think about it - which is fine until things go wrong or one partner dies.

your friends house is probably safe in his hands as her names not on it.

I disagree and the OPs male friend is lucky that this woman upped and left. He should change all locks immediately.

It is quite possible that had she not left the property, she could have engaged a skillful solicitor who would have built a case based on the premise that although he wasnt the father of her two kids, he was aware that they were a family unit when they met and entered into a relationship. further,he then purchased a home hitherto known as the family home,to accomodate the whole family unit. He is lucky she didnt stay and try to force him out using an occupation order. All those gullible men take note especially when getting involved in relationships with women who have children by previous relationships. Study TOLATA or suffer through ignorance. Sad but its true..one has to be wary of single moms because the law can help them make you homeless and seriously out of pocket.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I think there was a thread on here last year where this had happened. The ex's children were all from previous relationships but, because the man had taken on the family and provided a home for them, the ex was given the right to stay in the house until the youngest had left education. I can't remember what would happen to the asset after that - whether it reverted to him or the value had to be split.
