I'm going to buy a domain name and build a website, nothing terribly fancy, just something I want to challenge myself to. Can anyone recommend a site on which I can host if that is the right word my website? I've googled and there seems to be so many different companies, I am a complete idiot when it comes to technology, hence the challenge to myself! And help gratefully received - thanks in advance.

I have used both lcn.com and daily.co.uk, i find daily the easier to use and offer allot more products and better layout0

TSOHosts are my preferred company, good support and cheap.
Never trust information given by strangers on internet forums0 -
I've used about 15 different hosts and Vidahost, one of the first I went with, are still the best. Cheap, reliable and very helpful.0

Just don't click on the 'Members Area' it throws up an error, the forums which say 'soon' or the 'news', last updated in 2009.
Personally I'd rather pay £20 a year for something with 99.9% uptime and support if you need it.0 -

A second for Vidahost, and real England based humans on the end of the phoneEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I would argue that all of the above are wrong
Different webhosts use/ support different technologies (eg PHP, .Net, JSP etc), it is certainly the wrong way round to decide on a webhost and then be forced to build your site in the technologies they support - that would be like buying an engagement ring and then trying to find a girl that it fits to date.
You should decide on your solution first and then find a host that support it. (so find a girl and then buy an engagement ring that fits her)0 -
Another vote for Vidahost. Good support and economical. They also saved my bacon when I messed up my site. All it needed was a telephone call and they loaded a backed up version.0
