Hi

Can anyone tell me how important a driving license is for a job working with the Police in the forensics department, please.

I'm asking for my son.

Thanks in advance

I think you have been watching too much CSI.
Jobs in this field are as rare as Chicken dentures.
The police Dont generally employ Forensics any more, it has been contracted out.
But in short, I have never seen one arrive by taxi....

    Or helicopter or parachute.
  • My son is in the process of filling in an application form to work within the computer forensics department answering to the head of I think CID department.

There is a question that asks if you hold a full driving license and if you have access to a car for business use.

Then he needs to answer truthfully! Its not really a question that needs a lot of analysing, is it?

    Good luck to your son!

Obviously he needs to be truthful about whether or not he can drive. I've had a few interviewers ask me if I'm willing to learn to drive (& these are for normal office jobs, I didn't see why I'd need to drive!). Is he willing to learn?

A friend of mine is a SOCO for North Yorks Police. It is impossible to do the job without a driving licence.

    A) the OP's son is applying for a civilian job, not officer (I'm pretty sure all officers are expected to be able to drive). B) if it were an essential criteria in the OP's case then it should be stated as such in the person specification.

SOCOs (or whatever they might be called by their employer) don't have to be police officers (as in sworn police constables).

A lot of these support services roles are civilianised or farmed out to 3rd party companies.

No they aren't often police officers. But they do have to be able to attend at scenes in a timely fashion, wherever they are and at whatever time they are required at. I can't imagine it is a job that lends itself to "I couldn't get here because the bus doesn't start running until 6 am". But I agree with Breezay and Mildred - it doesn't matter really because he has to answer the question truthfully, an they'll make up their own minds about it.

I was responding to the post I quoted, not whether the applicant (for what looks to be an office based role from the info in post #4) would be less appealing to the employer as a result of not having a driving licence - nobody can tell.

Of course, if the job involves photographing a murdered computer in a field in the middle of the night, requiring a tent to be put over it, then I would imagine a driving licence would be essential...otherwise it might just be occasional travel to another office by bus.

I'd imagine if it was a show-stopper, they would make some reference to it in the job description.

I also don't think the OP was asking whether a truthful answer would be the best thing to put, just how much importance would be placed on having a licence.
