Electric meter vs normal billing?

Hi All,

I'm moving into a rented property in a few weeks time that currently has an electric meter installed, the landlord has said it wont be a problem changing to normal electric billing if we'd prefer though.

My question is (and I accept it may be a silly one!), are there any benefits in staying with an electricity meter? Other then keeping track of how much we spend I suppose.

All help's gratefully received!

With some companies(not all) their pre-pay meter tariff these days is roughly comparable with their other tariffs; although you don't get the discounts for Direct Debit etc.

It is also a bother 'topping up' the meter.

It is not always straighforward getting the meter changed to a credit meter. Some companies charge a fee and/or want a deposit.

If you have a good record of payment with a Utility company at a previous address, that will help. As will a good credit record.

The landlord is being a bit foolish there. You are new so a supplier may want to credit check, charge deposits and/or charge for the meter to be changed...they like charging for PPM's to be removed and tend to hold any new occupier in the same regard as the bad debtor.

So, you can try but you may need to switch to get what you want. Sometimes just threatening to leave see the visit charges dropped...
