I think I made a mistake with my NCDs

Hello All,

I think I have made a massive mistake using my NCD in my second car insurance policy. Let me explain briefly…

I have had my first car for 3 years now and so have claimed a 3 years NCD on it. Last February I purchased a second car and bought its insurance stating the same 3 years NCD that I had earned on the old one.

I recently found out that you can only claim NCDs per person and per car, and that I should have actually started from 0 NCDs on the new car, is this right? If so, I think I am in troubles here.

The policy of the new car states the 3 years NCD, but so did the policy of the old car. This means that I have been claiming the same NCD on 2 policies at the same time by mistake!

Luckily, the policy of the old car is now expired and I have been looking for new policies on this one. I have also received an email with the renewal policy for the old car and this is also considering my NCDs accumulated. The question is what do I do now? Here are the options I think I have;

1.- Leave the policy of the new car as it is (with the 3years NCDs) and purchase a new policy for the old car with 0 NCD. Can this be done? Or do I need a special process to transfer NCDs from the old car to the new one?

2.- Call the insurance company of the new car and tell them about the mistake I made and to correct it with a 0 NCD, they will probably charge me a lot more! Then, I could just purchase a new policy for the old car using my earned NCDs as normal.

3.- Cancel the policy of the new car and just buy a multicar policy for both cars using the earned NCDs as appropriate. I will probably lose some money in the cancelation but may save overall by buying a multicar policy.

Please bear in mind that the old car is worth around £800 and the new one around £8000, so which is the best car to use the earned NCDs?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards

    If the policy is due to expire and they have not asked for proof, You mnay have got away with it.

    I would change companies at any cost.

    I had a classic car company instantly give me 6 years no claims, I think they picked up on it several years later but it was too late by then i had moved on and used it elsewhere.

    No common database for them to check back then though.

    Multicar policies are not always cheaper.
