Extension - council tax rebanding?

Hi,

(Not strictly speaking house buying/selling so apologies for that!)

We have permission to put a large extension on our end terrace house.
It will nearly double the size of the house.
Will the council tax band be recalculated?
What if someone complains to the council? Might they reband it then?

Thanks in advance,

Zebs

As above ^^^^ , you potentially get branded online with an "improvement indicator" against your property - the CT is then reviewed following a "relevant transaction", typically house sale.

    Thanks for the info.
I thought I had heard this myself but thought it sounded too good to be true!

So if we keep the house for 20 years, we will save thousands of pounds?
    e.g. £50 per month * 12 * 20 = £12K

Yep - another reason why it's often better to build/extend rather than move. Just be aware at selling time - a savvy buyer will check, and if CT banding is critical for them it creates a problem, as it's very difficult to get a hard opinion for a local authority on whether the tax will rise or not, and if so to which band - so they end up with a degree of undertainty which may cause an issue.

    Just be aware...

If England (or Scotland) has a CT Revaluation, as Wales did in 2005, then the value of the extension will be reflected in the new band.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
