I'm visiting Barcelona for the first time later this year so am very interested in this thread. One feature I'm definitely going to try is the Transbordador Aeri del Port, or Port cable car. It sounds a fun, if hair-raising, ride!
  • thanks for all the responses so far - and thanks for the links to the flamenco places. They seem great but very expensive though! I guess it is barcelona so probably is the norm.

I wonder if there any "regular" cafes/restaurants that have guitar performances from local artists on evening as opposed to the more "organised events" - a bit like pizza express in green park london which hosts live jazz nights pretty regularly...

    Hi All,

Me and my wife are going to Barcelona for 6 days in July - it's for our honeymoon so it's not going to be a full-on site seeing trip however we do want to spend at least a couple of days site seeing and exploring the culture.

Looking for suggestions on must see sites, places to go, things to do. Anything specifically good for couples to visit for an a romantic break?

We'll be staying in a fairly central hotel.

    Thanks!

Do yourselves a favour and go eat at 7 Portes. Wonderful food, ambience and whilst not cheap is brilliant value for money. They make a fuss of pretty ladies too:) Very central.

Also, whilst Segrada and Gothic cathedrals are awesome, also make sure you see Egl!sia de Santa Maria del Mar. In my mind it is the most beautiful and if you are lucky, they have musical concerts there sometimes.

And of course, La Ramblas. Does not even liven up till at least 10pm! (the market is worth a look during the day - the fruit displays are incredible and you will see fish you have never seen before!)

Finally, even though it is wonderful city, if you drop your guard you WILL get pickpocketed. Just be careful with what and how you carry it and you will be fine.

How can you tell Barcelona is one of my favourite cities? And I have been fortunate enough to travel extensively :T

How about El 4 Gats in the gothic quarter food is great and they often have live music, starters seem a bit expensive but mains and desert are a good price..so is the house red :) your never be short of music anywhere in barcelona, an hour on the metro will be sick of the squeeze box, they busk on the trains and can be really entertaining so you may want to keep a few loose coins in your pocket, but there is no pressure to pay up.

Barcelona is a city you will fall in love with, as a country bumkin I find London a stressful hassle but Barcelona a joy, try and speak a little spanish it will amuse the locals and they will always see you in the right direction.

That advice is true of any city, I've never figured out why Barcelona gets such a bad rap, be like saying if you drive to Hull you are going to get your car stolen

For me it's simply down to personal experience. On our last three visits we've experienced one robbery and two attempted robberies

In forty years of travelling we have had only one similar experience elsewhere and that was on the Paris metro

I agree but on the 12 trips we have taken in the area we have never had an issue but I did have my purse lifted in Newcastle many moons ago.

To me the usual rules apply to anywhere, as a women I stick to an across the body handbag turn your bag so the front is towards your body and don't stick it on the back of your chair when your eating, but this should be good practice whenever your in a tourist area wherever in the world.

But I also think people get overly paranoid about Barcelona, usually those like my mother that have never been...she already convinced that we will be car jacked when we head to the states in January :rotfl:

    Hi,

I went to Las Ramblas many times while I was there a week ago. Didn't see any sign of pickpockets. (and No, I didn't find my money gone.) From a safety point of view, it worried me more walking along London's Oxford Street, e.g. not at all.. The "Living Statues" at the bottom of Las Ramblas, are a hoot.

The horse drawn carriage is expensive, I think I was told, 60 Euros per hour.

Moneywise, I took the Halifax Clarity Card - Not impressed at all. I have just got my statement. I withdrew the Euro equivalent of £220 and it cost me £27. What did I do wrong?

Numerous boat trips run from the Port. Barcelona Zoo is easy to get to and entertaining - there's a town called Sitges a few miles down the coast (4 Euros each way by train) where the swimming is better and its less crowded than Barceloneta. Gaudi's architecture at Park Guell and the Gaudi Cathedral is a must see.

    Have Fun !

I also applied for a Halifax Clarity card but it hasn't arrived in time and I'm flying out tomorrow. So I've just decided to use my Barlcays visa debit while I'm out there. They charge 2.9% for withdrawals but obviously there's no interest at all for cash or purchases.. the only things in the exchange rate isn't best but it's not that bad.. I'm guess that for every £100 I'll probably just lose at most £5-10.. might not be a saving compared to the halifax clarity but saves all the "faffing about", as they say..
