  • C'mon everyone... let's give a nice derisory slow hand clap for the OP's personal integrity.

Makes you proud to be British....doesn't it.

Certainly does. He should sit there and demand a higher ransom than that, I mean, come on, someone made a mistake.

Anyone with good advice, I look forward to hearing from you!
Imagine that it was you who paid £1000 into someone elses account, in error, instead of your own savings account, and that you couldn't get your money back because the person who received it was being difficult.....

I really can't see why you should expect ANY compensation for a mistake which hasn't caused you any inconvenience. I think it's very nice of the bank to offer you £25. You should say "thank you very much" and return the £1,000 to its rightful owner forthwith and without delay.

you lot are harsh, it wasnt his mistake in the first place.

You drop £50 on the street and see what percentage give it back. Its minute. Too minute to think the other way round, for me to give it back.

Its a no-win situation in this case so enjoy the £25

I believe that when the owner of the £50 is seen dropping it, it will be returned to them more often than not.

Though I have taken a bank note I found in the gutter to a police station, I would grant that not so many people would - probably in the belief that the owner is unlikely to report it. Though it is nice when you can go back later with a clear conscience and collect the unclaimed money.

  • Take the high ground and give the £25 to charity.

    You haven't earned it.
You were not out of pocket.
You've been asking can you effectively steal it.

Go for the feel good factor and do something socially repsonsible and positive with money.
  • wow! I didn't expect so many responses. thanks to you all for your comments. i'll be giving my consent to return the money and be donating the £25 to Plan International. thanks again. Jamie

I think 'legally' you are meant to hand in lost money to the police, or to the shop in which you find it.

I dont know if that is true, its probably something I just made up.

I saw a lady drop a tenner once, I ran after her to give it back. She thought I was trying to mug her at first. LoL
