Moving the gas meter

Hi there - hoping for some advice.
A few years ago I paid the gas board (or whoever the "official" people were) to move my gas meter outside - they charged me just under £1k
I'm now looking to extend the house and it looks like I'll have to have it moved again :(. It's currently at the back of the house and I'm looking to have it moved to the side (on the wall next to the driveway).

My questions are:
- do I really need to go through the "official" people to do this or is there anyone else who could do it (safely) for a more reasonable price (I'm in Manchester)?
- I'd like to have the box embedded into the wall if possible, to minimise the space it takes up sticking over the driveway, but last time I remember the "official" people said that I'd need to get someone in to do the fitting the box in the wall part. Do anyone know anyone/company who will do this? I don't trust myself to get the sledgehammer/chisel out myself ;)

TIA

Assuming you aren't doing the extension yourself, a builder can do all the prep work to supply and fit a suitable meter box. National Grid are only required when it is time to move the meter.

like davey says get the builder to build the box in the wall but don't forget you will need a RGI to move your pipework inside the house, no your gas transporter/transco or whatever you know them by are the only ones that can move your incoming supply.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Thanks both, I'll have a word with the builder :-)
