Mastercard refused in Holland & Germany

I agree with the previous posters who said that it was probably the retailer who was declining the payment. I have an HSBC Visa Debit from Uk and an HSBC Visa Debit from Australia. I am informed by the banks that my cards are acceptable anywhere that displays the Visa logo.
In practice this is not true. My UK Visa debit has been declined in a number of Australian stores where my Australian card was accepted and on a recent trip to Singapore my Australian Visa Debit was was rejected by an HSBC cash machine and I had to use a competitor bank to withdraw cash.
I think it is all down to merchant/bank fees although I don't think anyone is going to admit it.
