late payment, applying for another card

I have had 2 late payments on my virgin credit card in 12 months, both were because I'm a scatter brain and got them paid within 3 days.
I paid the balance in full on both occasions and got some of my late fee back.
The second was today, late by 3 days, paid balance off in full and cancelled my card straight away as i have had it a while.
I have now applied for another card with HSBC who i do my banking with, i told them i do not have any cards (should i have waited a few days for my virgin account to close?) what are my chances of being accepted? I'm going away next month so i could do with the added security of a credit card and 0% on purchases.

It will depend on how quickly virgin reported the missed payment

whyever have you closed the card?

having no CCs is usually a real no no when applying for a CC especially for picky people like HSBC

if your credit files show a current card when you have said you don't have one then that might create some difficulties

and set up a DD next time

To be honest i was angry at the fact i made a silly mistake and they wouldn't refund the whole late fee, so i thought i would go elsewhere.
I know they were within their right to charge me and they didn't have to give anything back at all, but i was still mad.

if / when you get a card elsewhere set up a direct debit straight away to save future missed payments / fees / bad credit etc :o
