How to connect a bluetooth keyboard to a phone

I am trying to connect a (mini) bluetooth keyboard to my Android phone.....
It detects it and tries to pair it - but asks me to ensure that the key is shown on the keyboard - which is difficult, if not impossible
I had no instructions with it and the supplied CD doesn't help either - not even mentioning the (long) button by the blue led.....
Any suggestions ?
