Haggling with a bank for a better interest rate?

Hello all,
I have a regular saver with Santander that ends in a few weeks. It's been paying me a nice 6% gross in interest for the past year but once it ends it will be paying me nearly nothing. So, rather than opening another regular saver with them (their reward saver now pays 2.3% gross) I was wondering if telling them I'll open a regular saver with another bank, unless they can match their previous 6% interest rate, would actually work in my favour...or make me a laughing stock! First Direct is offering an 8% regular saver, HSBC is offering 6% - can Santander match it? Is it possible to haggle with a bank for a better interest rate?

And before you say "why don't you just leave Santander and open the First Direct and HSBC regular savers?"...I already have opened those accounts, but I won't be telling Santander that :D

Thanks.

I know someone who always haggled with bus drivers, about the fare. It never worked.

Why would you want to try and haggle for 6% if you can get 8% elsewhere?

Zero chance. If Santander don't offer the rate, then it means they're not after the cash.

No - banking advisors, personal bankers, whatever you wanna call them don't have a couple of interest rate points up their sleeves to offer on request to the right customer. The rate is as displayed.

    Nice try though Haha

No chance, but please share on here what their response is! I'm sure if you were a multi billionaire they would be falling over themselves to keep your money in their bank. I'm going to take a punt and say you are not so I'm sure they will wish you well another bank.
  • let us know their response, if you get a better rate, I certainly want one too. I'm sure everyone in here will want a better rate too :)

I actually know someone who has a few mil, he asked for a better rate and got told no chance

Ask them please to give me the money, so I can have a go
  • Banks won't offer any more than they show you at first. They won't haggle with you - they want maximum profit.
