Basically you need to start by deciding what your aim is, for example getting people to join your facebook group or driving traffic to your website. I think it works best trying to get people to join your group as people are then staying within facebook so more likely to click on your advert.

There's different adverts you can use - sponsored stories or separate ad. To put it very simply you pay per click or for the number of impressions and you get full reporting. The best way is to try a few different ways and spend a fiver on each then you know what works best. You can set spending limits, as long as you set that correctly you won't end up paying a fortune.

BTW be as precise as you can in the ad criteria and it will make it much more cost effective. For example you can drill down by sex, age, locality and things like that.

A facebook page with a good amount of likes can just show that your company is popular to some extent. Even if the demographic isn't correct, it can have some benefits. Quotevertising on facebook will contribute to promotion.
