Can't find my PowerGen tariff

Last summer we were very close to moving home and arranged for Powergen to disconnect us on a given date.

However the move fell through and I called Powergen before the disconnection date to tell them. Despite this we continued to receive mail from Powergen addressed to the would be new owners of our home.

I called them again and said stop sending the mail, and why have you not send us a bill... anyway after a few more calls they admitted they had messed... there was then a period of about 20 days unaccounted for? that had to be estimated. The Gas reading were reset to 0 although the electric stayed as before.

Originally we were on Online Dual Fuel Saver and never received any bills... But after all the problems we once again started to get bills - I never really gave it a second thought...

Throughout the winter our Gas bill has gone through the roof, we got the latest bill this morning and are now over £200 in arrears. I decided to check the tariffs and can't the one listed for me (either on the Powergen website or price comparison ones).

It seems to me that we have been placed on the wrong tariff after the problems last Aug/Sept. and this is why we started getting paper bills again. I am really angry about this and will call Powergen first thing Monday. The bills give no indication except they say "No standing charge plan" in the electric section and just "Gas Plan" in the Gas section.

I have also checked many competitiors and their tarrifs seem to be cheaper than those shown on my bills since August - latest first..:-

Electricity 12/3/07
Primary Units 217kwh @ 15.96p (£34.63)
Secondary Units 1235 @ 8.38p (£103.49)

Gas 12/3/07
Primary Units 1102kwh @ 3.559 (£39.22)
Secondary Units 6764kwh @ 2.83p (£191.42)

Electricity 14/12/06
Primary Units 286kwh @ 15.96p (£45.65)
Secondary Units 1259 @ 8.38p (£105.50)

Gas 14/12/06
Primary Units 1453kwh @ 3.559 (£51.71)
Secondary Units 2025kwh @ 2.83p (£57.31

We live in a 3 bed end of terraced house with just a gas central heating combination boiler (everything else is electric). During winter the heating has been on for a few hours first thing in the morning and from late afternoon to late evening. I can believe we are using so much gas either. :(

Thanks

  • It sounds as thought they have closed down your original account and opened another, first in the name of the new occupier, and then changed that name back to you. You will probably find that your account number has changed. Once they close down an account, even in error, it's not possible to re-open it.

Ring them up, explain what has happened and they will be able to back date all of the tariff on your "new" account to the Online Dual Saver. It looks as though you are currently on their standard tariff, which is very expensive in comparison.

Regarding the gas bill being big, I would check that the reading you ended with on your "old" account is same as they started with on your "new" account, the fact that they started it at zero sounds as though it may not be. I also wonder if the reading on the 14th December was estimated, as there is a big jump in the bill after, which could be the affect of the zero read showing late.

The prices look like standard prices to me. Are you an online customer? or just get bills through the post?

I am - well was... a online customer and assumed I still was.... but have received the last three bills... the penny never dropped until the latest bill that they may have stuck me on the standard tariff. :(

Indeed...they have confirmed that I am on the standard tariff....

To be changed back to the Online Saver (and now Online Extra) I have to reregister online (the operator said she could not do it).

She agreed to monitor the account and would then backdate everything, send a new bill and and then call me... so that should be ok

ONly problem now is that the Powergen online registration is not available/working. :(
