Car Insurance For first time driver (NOT A YOUNG DRIVER)

I have been abroad for a long time, but live in the uk (and am English). I am 31 so do not qualify for any of the young driver schemes around. I passed my test this year and am looking for insurance on a little 900cc Micra but am still being quoted 3-5k for insurance. When the car is worth £600 it is just unfeasible.

HAve you followed the MSE guide?
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/compare-cheap-car-insurance
(And the risk for the insurer is far more than the value of your car).
As it would not be worth making a claim, go for the biggest voluntary excess you can (eg Swiftcover (not a reccomendation) go up to £1000 excess irrespective of how much the car is worth) and see if it helps.0
