Wooden Double Glazing?

Hello all,
I'm considering getting wooden double glazing in my house. I know its a fair bit dearer than upvc, but i prefer the look, and its better keeping with the house (plus my dad will disown me if i go for plastic, and i need his diy skills!)

I'm found a couple of options locally who I'm going to get in to do quotes, but was wondering if someone could help by perhaps outlining the process, offering a few questions to ask, that sort of thing?
eg, do they need to fit from the outside? There is nowhere to put scaffolding outside (lean-tos) so this might be a bit of a dealbreaker!
Can they be *any* shape? My house is an old shop, with shop front style window in three huge panes - any chance it would work?
What wood do people recommended, what kind of treatment/finish?

Any pointers or websites that explain things nice and simply would be really useful - or recommendations in the greater (west) london area!

If it helps, i only need three normal sized (?) windows, 1 v large window, plus the "shop" window.

Thanks in advance!

It does not let as much light through as glass. Stupid comment aside, have you also looked at aluminium frames? The surface can be anodised and dyed so it can look nice, and it does not need repainting unlike wood. Also the frames are apparently less likely to deform than UPVC which means less likelihood of seals blowing. New ones are nice, unlike the older aluminium ones that look naff.

Ha, thanks - yes i was thinking of something a bit clearer than boarding up!
I guess i mean wooden frames :) (so thats hopefully my first lesson)
I'll look into aluminium, as less maintenance is always a bonus.

Any thoughts on my other questions from anyone? Any good websites to look at?
    Ta!

Don't worry - they'll put the scaffolding over the lean-to.

I know, because I've just had some removed. Needed to replace guttering on the first floor, but there's a lean-to on the ground floor. They just built the scaffolding around it!

    Quite impressive :D

We have wooden DG that was fitted to the house when built.

We will go to UPVC when replacing it. The up keep is a pain, whether it be stain or paint as in our case. There are some nice profiles out there these days.

Having had good UPVC before I also think it seals better.
