blocked toilet arrgghh...

My lovely children have stuffed toilet paper down the toilet and when i went to flush it, the water rises right up to the rim (almost overflowing, yukk) - any ideas of how to sort this out, without getting too mucky? I'm a single mum and have no male friends/family so have to do this myself. No no technical ideas thanks

We have the same problem here, the way i usually clear it is by wrapping a hand towel around a toilet brush and using it as a plunger to clear the blockage.

Yes - I do it this way too. Certainly works. Or take your top off. Stick your arm right down (I guess it is only you and your family) and then have a nice bath ready. Good luck.

    Hi,

The plumbers might have to correct me here, but I'm sure that 9 times outta 10 if the water is coming to the rim then the blockage is quite near the bend in the loo - which is good news as it is quite easy to fix.

Don those rubber gloves chuck, and scoop out as much water as you can with an old cup, then fish out as much gunk as you can (yuk!) and get a plunger on it. Most plungers are shaped really for plugholes, although they may just work. You'll need to have a bit of water in the bottom for the plunger to work though - but not too much or you'll be covered in sh*t splashes!

If a normal plunger doesn't work, then you can buy a 'right size' one from Wilkos for £4.99, which has attachments on it that fit the shape of the base of the loo - I used one on my brothers loo after he had flushed antibac or baby wipes down it (a definite no-no as they don't dissolve like loo roll does) and it worked a treat.

I would almost bet my life that your little darlings have put something other than loads of loo roll down too - it is quite hard to block a loo with it unless they've put a whole roll down including the cardboard tube!

Good Luck and I'm sure there will be other helpful advice on here soon too! :)

Why are people so coy about toilet matter?

Put on a rubber glove and remove everything that is stuck in the toilet (it helps if you have a spare disposable plastic container but a plastic bag would do), flush again to make sure it is clear. I usually then just flush the rest down a bit at a time but then I am not squeamish about these things.

i generally find that a bucket of water poured from a height has enough force to clear the problem

my cousin had the same problem many moons ago and called an emergency plumber who said it would be minimum call out of £100 or something then he arrived and got his expensive plumber tool out - yes you guessed it - a wire coat hanger!
