Messenger on a Mac?

Help!!!!
Is there a reason why I cant use msn messenger on our Mac?
It keeps telling me there is a new version to be installed; if I install it, it looks like its installing then quits, and if I dont it lets me sign in and then quits.
I'd ask my OH (my usual response to anything computer related) but he's gone to the pub.
Any helpful MSers who are not at the pub.....?
