Recorded delivery - Item not received

I have a recorded delivery item I have not received. Nothing has been showing on-line for ages. I have contacted my sorting office the tracking number is not registering as being sent. Strange as the seller has very good feedback over the past five years.
I am in contact with the seller but just wondered how long I had before I could raise a paypal claim if needed eBay's cut off date is today.

Sent...or delivered? What is the message you are getting on-screen. If the tracking number is not valid, mention this to your seller; they may have made a mistake or typo when sending it to you.
Keep working with the seller; however, from what you say, it looks like the item has been genuinely lost and it may be worth asking directly for a refund or setting a date at which you would want one.
You have 45 days from payment to raise a claim but don't raise one unless the seller is being obstructive or refusing to refund.
As they have found out, Recorded Delivery doesn't guarantee the delivery of the item at all. I can't imagine they're very happy..."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

I have been in touch with my local sorting office and it is them saying the tracking number is showing as not been sent. I have quoted the tracking number issued to me after the sale of the item.
I am happy to work with the seller. I don't distrust them, something has just gone wrong here. They are going to check with the post office their end.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4

My guess they have either given you incorrect or fake ref no. As when you post something recorded it is scanned at the post office at the 1st point. I would advise the seller it is incorrect cde ad if they do not give a satisfactory answer witching 48 hours I woud make a claim for non delivery as soon as your allowed0

I agree with Okydoky. If the number they have given is definitely not working - try inputting it into the website - then I suspect the seller might be stringing you along.
Go http://www.royalmail.com/personal here, and the ability to enter a tracking number should be on the right-hand side, second tab under "Tools".
As you say, odd that they have such good feedback; but this would be beginning to ring alarm bells. I still would not go to dispute unless I knew the seller was telling porkies, but as OD says, I wouldn't give them too much time to stall me either. At some point you have to put your foot down.
I guess it would depend for me how long it was from the end of auction. In the past the times I have raised disputes have been two weeks from EOA (no contact from seller) and three weeks from EOA (contact, but not satisfactory contact from seller).
Both times the item has arrived. The times it has definitely not arrived at all were resolved amicably by the seller/website anyway, so it's up to you to judge what to do now.
Just don't leave it too long."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4

Paypal is the same time limit as ebay, 45 days, so if today's the cut off point for ebay you need to open the dispute today.
If the seller can sort it out then you can always cancel it.
I would suggest that a seller who hasn't refunded in this amount of time isn't a good seller at all.0 -

Was this an ebay purchase?
If so, then you should be raising an ebay dispute, not a paypal one. If ebay cut off is today (is it really 45 days since you bought the item) then I would suggest you don't delay another second.
The only way a seller can successfully defend an Item Not Received claim is for the seller to post the tracking code showing delivery. If the tracking code doesn't even show the item was sent, then ebay will refund your money through paypal.0 -
Recorded will only show as accepted if sent via the Post Office, my RD items go straight to the DO so Track & Trace on RM site will only show:
Recorded Signed For™ items are only tracked after the item has been delivered. Depending on whether the item was sent first or second class, this may be a few days after posting. Please try again later.
Information on your item is not yet available online.
It will also show this for a tracking number not yet sent so if you aren't getting that message something is wrong with the number.
As above if no resolve from the seller make sure a Item Not Recived case is opened within 45 days of payment. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0
