Disposing of nappies- ecologically acceptable way?

  • Flushable liners, emsy, or just hold the nappy over the loo and unfurl it. The solids will fall, resulting in a satisfying 'splosh' and splash. It's the same method for getting poos off fleece liners too.

    Those were the days :D

It's not at all acceptable and in many regions there are bye-laws making it illegal. People keep doing it though and it's utterly rancid.

Lotus-eater, it;s actually a huge problem as faecal matter should never, ever be sent to landfill as there are over 100 intestinal viruses present in faeces and when sent to landfill, rather than properly treated, can contaminate the groundwater, which can be a much, much worse environmental problem than the actual nappy in landfill.

I understand what you are saying, but I don't get it.

People have been digging holes in the ground and filling them up with human waste for as long as there have been people.

It's not a huge problem, otherwise we would have problems with it now and we don't.
Because everyone does it (most people any way).

Considering the amount and type of stuff that goes to landfill, poo is the least of my concerns.

It is a problem we just don't get to hear about it. LAs have to manage landfill sites for a minimum of 25 years after they close, spending vast amounts of money in so called leachate management - ensuring for example that when it rains, the contaminated water leaving the site doesn't end up in the ground water or near public green spaces.

It's more of a problem now than ever before since these sites are located closer to residential areas as the population has expanded.

Are you trying to tell me they do this because of poo in nappies? I just don't believe it.

How long do you think it takes human waste to decompose? A few years depending on conditions.
What about dog waste (longer than human) yet I don't recall any problems with it being in landfill.
    Low level nuclear waste?
    Plastic waste?
    Toxic metals?

Lets get realistic, human waste is not exactly the worst thing we have to worry about.

No I am not saying it is due to baby poo, it's a problem with landfill overall. Dog waste put into the bins LAs provide is not taken to landfill. Nuclear waste would not go to a council landfill. Ditto toxic metals. LAs provide dumps with seperate streams for this type of waste. It does happen, because the restrictions on household waste are lax compared to controlled waste. But that doesn't mean it should.

No it isn't the worse thing, but the OP was asking how best to manage it from an environmental perspective, and this has been answered.

I think we have just proved the point I was making then.

  • I'm not going to start scraping, (because that's what it would take) squishy sticky poo out of my son's nappies for anything!

I use disposables for a reason!

Some councils provide separate bags for nappies and they are collected weekly. I assume they get incinerated rather than landfill.

Faith is the denial of observation, so that belief can be preserved.

just like everything else , we dig a hole and chuck it in leaving it for future generations to deal with if it all goes wrong
