Suggestions for a weekend in Northumberland

Hello all,
Me and my wife were thinking of going for a weekend away soon, and this time, we quite fancied Northumberland.
I can't find anyone around me that knows much about it or can recommend much, so I thought I might post it here to get some recommendations!
We want to be in a decent town - a few shops maybe - doesn't have to be coastal, but offering nice scenery, and some light walking - a few hours in the countryside.
A pub or two with good food, and within an hour driving of the touristy castles.
I can look through hotels, if anyone can give me an idea of a town/locale, or even recommend a hotel (not hundreds of quid though!)
Any ideas?

We had a fantasic week in Northumberland in October, can't wait to go back. My 1st choice would be Lindisfarne/Holy Island, very tranquil/beautiful - Bamburgh (sp?) would be next. Places to visit; Lindisfarne, Alnwick Gardens, Dunstanburgh Castle, Cragside.....have a lovely time!0

The are plenty of B&Bs and pubs to stay in. Try smoothhound.co.uk, you can search by map.
The Tyne valley west of Newcastle around Hexham or Corbridge is lovely (Slaley Hall is a nice hotel, but it is hundreds!) If you want to be nearer the heart of Northumberland Alnwick is a larger town with plenty close by, Rothbury is a small town not far from Alnwick with plenty of walking opportunities, a great butchers for picnic supplies and is the home of Cragside House.0 -

Hi,
Dont tell anyone, but a great place to spend a weekend in Northumberland is my home..... the tiny village of Barrasford
As well as being close to Hadrian's Wall, Kielder Water, Hexham and lovely countryside it is only half an hour from the bright lights of Newcastle upon Tyne.
Stay at the Barrasford Arms - an award winning gastro pub with rooms ran by a chef who trained under Albert Roux.
I hope this helps, but dont tell anyone!0
