van hire accident not at fault

Hi,

My company hired a van for me to drive for one day last year.

Someone drove into the back of the van causing a small dint.

The other driver accepted responsibility and I got my deposit back from the hire company even though it took quite a while.

Do I need to state this on my car insurance? I'm assuming the Van Hire company claimed for the damage but I never received any paperwork regarding any claims etc.

Thanks.

Even though you were not at fault you still have to declare it

Even if I don't know whether a claim was ever made?

    Yes.

You don't just report "claims"! Read up on the trouble that people have ended up with by wrongly assuming this! (Voided policies/insurance cancelled/claims rejected etc)

Read your policy and you will see wording along the lines of you need to inform them of "all incidents/losses etc which could have lead to a claim"

Don't be surprised that Premium will drastically rise.

Notifying your insurer won't affect the premium at all now, but may do at renewal.

So at renewal shop around for the best deal.

I'm due for renewal now and thought with being 26 years old, having 3 years no claims, having no accidents that were my fault, got only one speeding ticket which was 4 1/2 years ago (taken off my counterpart but still have to declare it) that my insurance would be a lot cheaper than it is.

Currently the cheapest I can find is about £940 although this does include putting my girlfriend on the policy.

Also, the cheapest quote is from Admiral and they bump it up to about £1450 if I want to spread the cost over the whole year.

Ignorance may be bliss, but it's no defence when it comes to the law.

As it took time to get your deposit back, I suspect your presumptions may be correct, but if you want to know for sure, ask them :)

About 50% increase just for spreading the cost over a year?

Consider getting a loan to cover the annual premium, or even paying by credit card; it'll be cheaper than Admiral's extortionate interest charges.
