Short term insurance for new driver

My daughter has just passed her test and I phoned my insurer to ask about putting her as a named driver onto our insurance until August 31st. She won't need longer than that as she's going away to Uni in September. They would only add her for the balance of the year, which is end of November, at a cost of over £600. I asked if it would be possible to cancel her insurance at the end of August and get a refund. The answer was that I could certainly cancel but there was no guarantee I would get any refund "because market rates might have have changed..." I phoned a broker to see what they could offer and was told that she could only be added to our existing insurance.

So the question is this - Is there any other way I can insure my daughter for 2 months to drive my car?

There are temporary car Insurances available e.g dayinsure.com, but she may find these very expensive, if they quote.

For such a short space of time, I don't think it is worth it. I suspect that she could find many more uses for the money. Use public transport and for the money she saves, she can spend it on getting ready for Uni.

If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • Thanks for the response. I took a look at dayinsure but they don't take drivers under 21. Unfortunately, where we live (in the middle of nowhere) there's no public transport so driving is about the only option.. She was hoping to use our car while we're away on holiday next month, otherwise I wouldn't really be bothering.

Looks like you will be her taxi driver then. Hope you have flexible hours and don't mind late nights !

I have just searched 'temporary car Insurance under 21' and a site money.co.uk lists 5 companies that do this. Can't link,as this site does not allow.

Thanks, but none of the sites it brings up will meet the requirements. Some, such as AA just go direct to their home page. The closest would be tempcover.com but she needs to have held the license for minimum 6 months.

You can only try and if it is too expensive, then driving your car is not an option.

Have you looked into costs of cancelling the current policy and obtaining alternative quotes elsewhere. Sometimes contacting a local broker who deals with these issues on a daily basis is the best option.
